Glomeruli Dataset

Glomeruli Dataset

The analysis of vessels in the slides of a kidney is significant for the diagnosis of liver diseases. One of the most challenging tasks in tissue microscopy analysis is the detection and processing of glomeruli in the kidney. The key role of the kidneys is the filtration of liquids and excretion of waste products of metabolism and extra potassium, sodium, and chloride ions gathered in the blood. Medical renal diseases may affect the glomeruli, the tubules and interstitium, the vessels, or a combination of these compartments. The glomerulus is an essential section of the nephron, the fundamental unit of the kidney. Each kidney contains nearly one million nephrons which are able to form urine. Bringing blood, which carries waste products, to the nephron is the particular duty of a glomerulus. Any disease of the glomeruli, such as acute or chronic glomerulonephritis, have to be regarded critical as it obstructs the basic functions of the kidneys. Automatic analysis of microscopy structures of the kidney is significant to the renal pathologist as he/she should manually obtain the essential data which is often a time-consuming and tedious task.
The dataset provided here contains microscopic images of kidney sections that can be used for the automatic detection of glomeruli, the quantification of glomeruli characteristics such as thickness and structure of Glomerular Basement Membrane (GBM), etc.
